Box Appetit

A glass-like lid with with Eastman Tritan™ copolyester

Black+Blum lunchboxes by by Dan Black and Martin Blum

Tired of using dull, leaky tupperware, Dan Black of the London design house Black+Blum came up with the idea to cure his own lunch-box blues. “I was eating from a container that really wasn’t intended for the purpose – and everyone around me was doing the same.” Black set out to produce Box Appetit, an organized, watertight, microwavable, and dishwasher safe lunch box.

Box Appetit includes a contoured color-keyed body complimented by a clear Eastman Tritan™ copolyester lid. “The lid,” Black explained, “was the tricky part.” “The polypropylene body was straightforward; the challenge was finding a material suitable for the lid. An opaque polypropylene lid would have worked, but it lacks the desirability we wanted. By using Tritan™ to create this beautiful thick-sectioned clear lid we’ve given Box Appetit a very definite aesthetic appeal.”

Eastman Tritan™ was the ideal new generation copolyester for the Box Appetit lid, offering high performance properties, including: clarity, colorability, druability, ease of processing, and heat and chemical resistance. Tritan provided superior performance and design flexibility compared to other clear thermoplastics like polycarbonate (PC), styrene acrylonitrile (SAN), and acrylics. Tritan’s ease of processing supported the production of the lid’s intricate shapes using injection molding.
