Box Appetit

A glass-like lid with with Eastman Tritan™ copolyester

Do you have a lunch box, or simply a box containing lunch? Chances are it’s the latter and that dull, hazed container is pretty similar to the one half-filled with leftovers in the refrigerator or the one in the garage with the collection of antique washers and vintage fuses. It gets the job done – but it doesn’t do it well.

That’s where Box Appetit comes in.

Dan Black of the London design house Black+Blum came up with the idea to cure his own lunch-time blues. “I was eating from a container that really wasn’t intended for the purpose – and everyone around me was doing the same.”

And so Black+Blum created Box Appetit – a lunch box with a distinctive glass-like lid made from Eastman Tritan™ copolyester.

“It’s dishwasher safe, and it has a little saucepot and a fork with a cutting edge,” says Black. “The box is water-tight and so is each of the removable compartments. The inner dish allows you to separate your food, so you can microwave a casserole without having to microwave your side salad too. There’s a gray area regarding what can and cannot be placed in the microwave and the dishwasher. Tritan™ is the only clear material that isn't in the gray area – though we feature a warning label saying that it's fine to go in the microwave for two minutes. Obviously people sometimes microwave for longer, but that isn't reheating, it's cooking.”

Box Appetit is highly functional but also beautifully formed with a contoured, color-keyed body complimented by the clear Eastman Tritan™ copolyester lid. “The lid,” Black explains, “was the tricky part.”

“The polypropylene body was straightforward; the challenge was finding a material suitable for the lid. An opaque polypropylene lid would have worked, but it lacks the desirability we wanted. By using Tritan™ to create this beautiful thick-sectioned clear lid we’ve given Box Appetit a very definite aesthetic appeal.”

Box Appetit comes with a recipe book and a carrier bag that doubles as a table-mat. It doesn’t guarantee lunch will taste better, but as the saying goes, the first bite is with the eye.
