Christmas arrived nine days early for Austen Angell and Joel Newman of the Portland, Oregon design firm, Modern Edge.

That's when Austen and Joel first saw photos of Austin Joel Oduori, born while they were doing design research on the HydroPack™ as part of a demonstration project Jan. 18-28, 2011 in the Western Kenya village of Mudimbia. Hydration Technology Innovations and the Kenya Water for Health Organization conducted the project, partially funded by Eastman.

A Village to Remember

The floods are what brought Hydration Technology Innovations (HTI) to Mudimbia for a 10-day project to demonstrate how the HydroPack™ can be used in an emergency relief situation.

Verdict at the Village Well

The first day of the HydroPack™ demonstration project in Kenya was a big success.

HydroPacks™ were distributed to 90 households in Mudimbia. Any doubt about the villagers’ response to the HydroPack™ was eliminated early.

Nice Day

The word for the second day of the HydroPack™ demonstration project in Kenya was: Nice.

On tasting the flavored HydroPacks™, kids and their mothers were calling it, "Nice." Ann Jonai, 21, gave a HydroPack™ to her two-year-old sister, Britney, to sip. She never got it back. Ann, the second oldest of eight children, says the HydroPack™ will be important next time it floods.

When Someone Cares

They are fishing camps with all of the characteristics of a refugee camp. There are no latrines and the only water to drink is the contaminated water in Lake Victoria.

So the HydroPack™ is ideally suited for the 500 residents of Sango Naganda, two beach islands located near the convergence of the River Nzoia and Lake Victoria.

George Otieno Agreng'o is a chemist working for the Lake Victoria South Water Services Board. He has been testing water samples during HTI's Kenya pilot demonstration project for the HydroPack™.
