“It's almost like magic – Forward Osmosis,” says Nathan Jones, vice president of government and institutional sales for Hydration Technology Innovations (HTI). “It's as old as the Earth and yet, it's not something you expect. You put this bag in a filthy, dirty ditch and it creates an absolutely pure drink that's hydrating and delicious.”

The “bag” Jones refers to is the HydroPack™ – a thin pouch that on contact with brackish water swells up over 8-to-12 hours to provide a nutritious drink.

The HydroPack™ will be the focal point of a pilot demonstration in Kenya where they will be used in a disaster scenario.

“What we hope to gain from the Kenya project and our collaboration with Eastman is a broad awareness of the capabilities of these products for populations that are in distress,” says Walter Schultz, chief executive officer for HTI.

Adds Jos de Wit, senior research associate for Eastman: “This will be a demonstration unlike any other. And it will immediately aid the people who need it”
