A material with a long, colorful history is now better and more relevant than ever.

Rotuba Extruders Ltd., of Linden, NJ, has taken cellulose plastics, a tried and proven material made from softwood trees and cotton, and added a natural-based plastic softener to produce Naturacell™ – a durable plastic that can be reprocessed, recycled and reused in most applications.

“We’ve made a good product even better,” says Adam Bell, president of Rotuba, a long-time Eastman customer. “Response to Naturacell™ is highly positive because it offers a credible sustainability story combined with the excellent performance record of the cellulose plastics family.”

The list of potential applications covers products ranging from toys to tools to hair and kitchen accessories to cell phones.

Naturacell™ is easily molded and extruded and is suitable for secondary fabrication, including solvent polishing, cutting, cementing, drilling, vacuum forming, metalizing and decorating.

To demonstrate the superb clarity, toughness, chemical resistance and warm-to-the-touch feel of Naturacell™, Rotuba is offering designers a limited edition screwdriver with a handle made from the material.

“The screwdriver showcases the attributes of Naturacell™ as well as its storied past in tool handles,” says Bell. “There are other bio-polymers being marketed as eco-friendly and sustainable but Naturacell™ is the only one that can claim a long manufacturing history. In fact, cellulose plastics have been used in screwdriver handles since the late 1930s.”
