Evolution. We like that word. It describes the process by which things develop: discarding the redundant; promoting the useful. In the natural world evolution is a response to environment. It's the same in the lab; though we don't use the word 'environment' – we prefer 'opportunity'.

Fragrance packaging is a market enduring an evolutionary leap and is no longer frequented by an exclusively female clientele. And the boys – along with some of the girls – work and play tough. Glass bottles work just fine on the dressing table, but they don't do so well in the sports bag, the glove box or rolling around in the office drawer. The environment has changed and provided the opportunity for Eastman's Glass Polymer®.

The Glass Polymer is shatterproof, yet retains the clarity and feel of glass. It thrives in a rough-and-tumble environment and provides more than moral support for fragrances targeted at consumers with an active lifestyle. The latest demonstration comes in the booming Brazilian cosmetics market, long heralded as a hotbed of originality. The Clipping range from O Boticário taps into a high-energy market for male cosmetics in South America. The silver-painted Glass Polymer vessel has made a stunning debut at home, but targeted at one market does not mean unacknowledged in others. Hence the recent triumph of Clipping, granted the Oscar de L'Emballage award for innovation by the celebrated French Institute for Packaging and Packing.

Injection molded in two pieces, the thick-walled Clipping flask, developed by Spanish designer, Juan Carlos Rustarazzo, relies on The Glass Polymer not only for its shock resistance, but also for its inherent ability to withstand the chemical attack of the aromatic oils contained within – exposure to which can cause cracks or fractures in many polymer resins. The consumer, however, isn’t interested in the mechanics of packaging. From an aesthetic point of view Clipping presents an elegant contrast between the soft-to-the-touch black Santoprene™ push button created by Advanced Elastomer Systems and Eastman’s Glass Polymer vessel. Together, they form a stylish combination that has seen instant success and critical acclaim.
