Gary Waterworth Owen, founder of ResponseAbility Alliance and managing director of Lengthen Your Stride, Ltd, has documented more than 350 different answers to that question.

By contrast, Owen has found that “most people know exactly what responsibility means.”

Owen adds: “The definition between responsibility and sustainability, for me, is very clear. That's why we focus on that as a cause to try and achieve this elusive goal called sustainability.”

Owen sees “accepting responsibility for our own actions” as the cause and sustainability the effect if we do so.

He began taking business teams on walks into the Sinai desert as part of Lengthen Your Stride, a venture he started to teach others what he has learned about the environment, different cultures, and the importance of water.

“Walking through a desert is a far better metaphor of life and success in business than climbing to the top of mountains,” Owen says. “Until we are aligned with what we value most, only then can we lengthen our stride toward our goals.”
